A protector under pressure
Cassian is a mage carrying responsibilities larger than his title. He maintains the wards around Valdoria’s villages and helps rescue people caught beyond their failing boundaries. The apprentice works beside him before confronting the cost of that protection.
What the wards conceal
Cassian knew that Seran survived the supposed mountain collapse. Fearing that severing the network would destroy the wards, he chose to keep the system running. The suffering in the outer valley and the evidence recovered by the apprentice make that choice harder to defend.
Breaking the command oath
Cassian eventually refuses Magister Varos’s demand to take Seran away. He acknowledges the cost of the wards before the council and later breaks his command oath while the apprentice protects him. His part in the restoration grows from accepting responsibility for what he helped maintain.
